Spring Semester

Filed under: GTC — fraide @ 8:29 am

Now that the spring semester is under way please be aware that we have a full one week spring break starting March 15th through March 21st. As students, we need to keep that in mind when it comes to assignments that need to be turned in. I would also like to let you know the information for the Healthy Living Challenge is located on Blackboard under the community tab. Just fill in the word “health” in the organization search box; then push enroll and all the information should be there. The first weigh-in is February 5th at the Elkhorn campus. There will be two available times that you can weigh in.  The first one is in room 133 at 11:30 a.m through 1:30 pm and the second one is in room 112 at 4:30pm through 6:30 pm.  Remember that no one besides you and the advisors will be able to see your weight, so please do not hesitate to join the Elkhorn SGA in the Healthy Living Challenge.

Elkhorn campus has the Wii console and games.

Filed under: GTC — fraide @ 3:33 pm

The Elkhorn Campus has the amazing Wii console in the student lounge that is avaliable to all students! The Wii controllers and games can be checked out in the library as long as you provide your student  I. D. or valid drivers license. The drivers license or student ID will be held while you use the controllers and games. Upon returning the items checked out one will receive their identification.  The games can be checked out for two hours at a time and one must sign in and out in the library! If someone wants to use the items while another person is using them they must put their name on the waiting list and will have to wait for the people ahead of them to finish in order do so.  Many students are enjoying this opportunity.

New year New semester

Filed under: GTC — fraide @ 4:20 pm

Hi everyone!  Welcome back to another new semester.

Do we have everything we need? Our schedule, books, paper, and pens?  Are you signed up for any clubs or organizations here at Gateway?

Remember to take one day at a time, if you are having difficulties, there are counselors, an academic support center, and fellow students here to help you.

Look to the future because when all is said and done you will have a college education that will help you find a career you will enjoy.

Do not forget that February 3,2010 is the next SGA meeting here at the Elkhorn campus in room 112 at noon.

Weather

Filed under: GTC — fraide @ 4:04 pm

Hi students, as you know, it is that time of year to be careful and warm. Please make sure you have plenty of gas in your vehicle along with an ice/snow scraper and a warm coat. It is also that time of year where we get nervous or excited about finishing another semester. Over the past two semesters I have learned how to slow down, breathe and just do the best you can do. Take one assignment at a time,  talk to your teachers, make an appointment with your counselor and go to the academic support center if you are having difficulties with your school work. As long as you are making an effort you should be fine. I hope everyone has a successful and joyous new year.

Leadership Conference

Filed under: GTC — fraide @ 2:47 pm

On November 14, 2009 I attended a leadership conference at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville called ED-Venture.

I highly recommend this event for any club looking for team building skills. I learned how to listen, work together as a team, depend on and trust other people as well as conquer some of my fears! I learned how to rock climb, (which is not as easy as it looks), and how to zip-line (the scariest thing I have ever attempted).

As I attempted to do both of these activities I knew I would have to trust people to help me accomplish my goal of reaching the top or jumping, without the trust I would not have even thought about engaging in these proceedings.

One of the activities we were asked to do as a team was take a bowling ball that layed upon an open tube that had a small rope attached to each corner and have the bowling ball roll onto another open tube back and forth across a field, up eight steps across a landing back down eight steps and into a container without touching the ball or tube. This activity definitely required group cooperation.

I pushed myself to accomplish my goals. I am glad I did this because now I know I can push myself to work harder and to continue to try new things. To see pictures of this ED-venture click here

Student Government Association

Filed under: GTC — fraide @ 4:54 pm

Hi everyone, I would like to talk to you about Student Government Association (SGA).

I became involved with the student government because  I like to help people in anyway that I can. As an officer of SGA I am learning leadership skills that employers  look for in the work force.

I enjoy SGA because it gives me chance to deal with a wide range of people and personalities, as well as network with other students. I also like meeting the school staff and faculty and learning how the school operates as a whole. I can honestly say that over the last two years I have met the most kindhearted faculty and staff here at the Elkhorn campus.

Students should get involved with the SGA because it serves as the voice of the student body, helping students have an easier campus life, solve simple problems, promote campus events and support community projects.

The SGA also has campus events such as discounted tickets to sponsored events, community projects, and family friendly movie nights on campus!

Did you know that you may already be a member of the Student Government Association? A portion of the student fees included in your tuition goes to support the SGA,  so if you are a tuition paying student- you are a member! All you need to do now is become an active member!

Elkhorn SGA meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month at noon in room 112. We also provide free lunch for the students who attend the meetings.

SGA  has other school clubs that attend the monthly meetings, these clubs can receive points that add up at the end of the year. The club with the most points is able to win gifts or awards that represent their club. Students can also earn points for each meeting they attend by being a member of a club, participating in school spirit, bringing a freind or fellow student, and attending every meeting.  At the end of the year three students with the most points win great prizes!

The clubs that are being represented at the SGA meetngs now are HOSA-MA (Health Occupation Students Of America Medical Association), G-CPU (Gateway Computer Professionals United Computer Club), BPA (Business Professionals of America), C.O.P. (Chi Omega Phi),  TSC (The Silent Connection) and the Robotic Welders Club.

The above mentioned clubs have a bulletin board competition and every month they have a theme and deadline they have to follow, the bulletin boards are judged by school staff and the club that wins receives $75.00

This semester the Elkhorn SGA sold tickets to Fright Fest for only $15 a ticket,  and now we are having a food drive to sponsor the local food pantry. We are asking all students and staff to bring in at least one non perishable food item to help us support our community.

On December 11, 2009 at 5 pm in the Student Commons,  Elkhorn SGA is having a FREE family movie night and  photos with Santa!    Please join us and bring your family!

December 2, 2009 at noon  in room 112 is our next meeting.  Hope to see you there.

Introduction

Filed under: Uncategorized — fraide @ 9:54 am

Hi everyone, my name is Elizabeth Fraid and I am the Public Relations officer for the Elkhorn Student Government Association. I am currently enrolled in the Mechanical Design Technology program as well as the Mechanical Design Mechatronics program, and will be graduating in May 2010. I decided to go back to school because I wanted a career I enjoy and could depend on. I started my college education in August 2002 and  finished with my Technical Diploma in Drafting in May 2004.  After four years of working, I decided to go back to school again so I could earn my Associates Degree. In January 2008, I began my electronics classes in Mechatronics.

Over the years I have had many changes as a student. I learned how to communicate with my teachers and fellow students, how to organize my time, where and who to go to for help and how to enjoy my school life. I learned that the more you get involved with your school the easier it is to succeed in school. I believe the same applies for your job or career. Gateway has made my learning experience pleasant and successful. I do not feel stressed or frustrated as a student.

When your not stressed at work or school you have no stress to bring home. I am a proud mother of three children ages 20, 18, and 16, with four step children 20, 18, 15 and 12. My grandchildren are 3 and 4 months old so I am extremely busy outside of school!  As a mother and grandmother I have learned to put all of my experiences together which has made me a better person. When I graduate I plan to find a job that will turn into a career and move to Florida. Why Florida? Because  I love the ocean! To me it is the best way to relax.
